Former Los Angeles Angels manager Joe Maddon says he has disassociated himself from the club since he was fired on June 7.
“It’s like, once that happened, I dissolved my affiliation with them,” Maddon told Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. “There’s no emotion anymore. There’s no anything. It’s like to me they don’t even exist, organizationally."
Maddon, who was fired amid a 12-game losing streak and a 27-29 start, had a 33-year relationship with the Angels, dating back to when he signed as a free-agent catcher in single-A ball in 1975, and involved managing at both the minor-league and big-league level.
The 68-year-old told Topkin that he takes no satisfaction from the fact the team is 25-38 since his firing and will be very selective about taking his next job.
“I would only go into that marriage really feeling good about that I’m philosophically aligned with whomever I’m going to work with,” he said. “Meaning, it has to be a balance, it just can’t be lopsided analytically. Baseball operation has to be one that understands both sides and understands it well.”
Perry Minasian is the Angels' GM who fired Maddon, having been in the role since 2020. Maddon was also hired in 2020.
