The fate of the Chicago Cubs season is in the hands of Kevin Gausman.
Gausman will start Game 2 for the Cubs in their wild-card series against the San Diego Padres with his team facing elimination on Wednesday (Sportsnet, Sportsnet+, 10 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. PT).
The ex-Blue Jay arrived in Chicago just before the trade deadline and went on to make nine starts for the club, posting a 4-2 record, 4.83 ERA and 1.23 WHIP with 57 strikeouts over 50.1 innings.
Gausman faced the Padres once this season while with Toronto in July, tossing six innings with four hits, three runs, three walks and eight strikeouts.
He injured his left shoulder making a diving tag at third base in his most recent start Sept. 23 for the Cubs but was deemed healthy enough to be included on the post-season roster.
The 35-year-old made six appearances for the Blue Jays during last year's post-seasons, registering a 2.93 ERA.
Chicago was walloped 8-0 by the Padres in Game 1 of their wild-card series on Tuesday as starter Matthew Boyd was stung for four runs over four innings.
