New York Mets ace Max Scherzer will head to the injured list and miss his next start, manager Buck Showalter announced Wednesday.

Scherzer left Saturday's loss to the Nationals early with what the team initially described as "fatigue in the left side."

Showalter didn't seem concerned about the future Hall-of-Famer's long-term status, saying that the IL stint will be backdated and that he expects Scherzer to be activated when he is eligible.

"It was actually pretty good news all things considered," Showalter said.

The move comes at a difficult time for the Mets, as they have lost three-straight games and now are tied with the Atlanta Braves for the NL East lead.

Scherzer, 38, remains among the elite pitchers in the game in now his 15th season. In 20 starts, he has a 2.26 ERA with 153 strikeouts.
