The New York Mets announced Wednesday that they transferred right-handed starter Kodai Senga to the 60-day injured list.
Senga, who began the season on the 15-day IL after being diagnosed with a moderate posterior capsule strain during spring training, finished seventh in NL Cy Young voting and second in NL Rookie of the Year voting in 2023.
The 31-year-old posted a 2.98 ERA and 202 strikeouts over 166.1 innings in his first season in MLB. He signed a five-year, $75-million contract with the Mets in December 2022 after pitching for NPB's Fukuoka Softbank Hawks from 2012 to 2022.
His 60 days are retroactive to his original IL placement, so the earliest he can return is in late May.
New York announced earlier Wednesday that it was selecting the contract of left-hander pitcher Tyler Jay. So moving Senga to the 60-day IL opened a spot for Jay on the 40-man roster.
