Turns out the Los Angeles Dodgers haven't clinched a playoff berth just yet.
While Major League Baseball had said on Sunday that the Dodgers (96-43) secured a post-season spot with their 11-2 victory over the San Diego Padres, the league announced it made an internal error on Monday.
The Dodgers' magic number remains one heading into their game against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday, despite the fact that the team got caps with the playoff logo on Sunday night and celebrated with a toast.
The Dodgers are 20 games ahead of the Padres for first in the National League West, so the team's 10th consecutive playoff spot is a mere formality.
But MLB said Monday there is a scenario in which the Padres could overtake the Dodgers for first in the NL West and that L.A. could then finish in a three-way tie with the Milwaukee Brewers and the St. Louis Cardinals in the wild-card standings. In that scenario, the Brewers would win the NL Central and the Cardinals would eliminate the Dodgers by virtue of tiebreaker.
The Dodgers would have to go 0-23 the rest of the way to miss the playoffs.
