After the worst statistical season of his MLB career, Trea Turner drew the ire of his general manager on Thursday.
“He did not have a good year," said Philadelphia Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski to media on Thursday.
"He needs to fix things with his swing. He knows he has to be better at shortstop. I told him that is mandatory. I told him he cannot play shortstop like he did in 2026, going into 2027.”
Turner, 33, posted a career-low minus-0.1 bWAR. He slashed .242/.297/.378 with 19 home runs and 58 RBIs.
However, his defensive work was far worse. Turner committed an MLB-high 21 errors, graded out as a minus-nine by Statcast's fielding run value and tied for an MLB low with minus-17 defensive runs saved.
Dombrowski added that Turner will start the season at shortstop, but must play well defensively to continue at the position.
If not, the Phillies POBO implied that changes will be made.
According to Dombrowski, Turner agreed that he had a bad season, took full accountability, and is already working on his swing.
