The Boston Red Sox activated two-time all-star Trevor Story on Tuesday afternoon ahead of their game against the Kansas City Royals.
The 30-year-old is slated to bat third and start at shortstop in his first game back from off-season elbow surgery to repair his UCL.
Infielder Yu Chang was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.
Story is in the second season of a six-year, $140 million deal he signed ahead of the 2022 campaign.
In his first season with the Red Sox, Story appeared in 94 games, slashing .238/.303/.434 with 16 home runs. He only played second base for Boston after spending the first six seasons of his career at short with the Colorado Rockies.
After losing Xander Bogaerts to the San Diego Padres in the off-season, Boston's shortstops have ranked near the bottom of MLB in nearly every offensive category.
In 13 rehab games, between double and triple-A, Story hit .300/.417/.700 with four home runs and four doubles.
The Red Sox are currently five games behind the Toronto Blue Jays for the final wild card spot in the American League with a 58-54 record and are 3-7 over their last 10 games.
