Boston Red Sox right-hander Liam Hendriks underwent successful right elbow surgery, the team announced on Monday.
The 36-year-old received an ulnar nerve transposition with posterior interosseous nerve release. The procedure was done by specialist Dr. Keith Meister.
Hendriks signed with the Red Sox in February of 2024 and made his first appearance with the club in April of this year after undergoing a prior UCL surgery.
He held an inflated 6.59 ERA with 12 strikeouts in 13.2 innings over 14 games in 2025, mainly appearing as a middle reliever.
The former all-star closer was placed on the 15-day injured list following an outing on May 27 with right hip inflammation. He was transferred to the 60-day injured list in July after a setback during the recovery.
He was in the process of ramping up to try and return for the team's post-season run when he experienced the forearm soreness. The Red Sox are set to face the New York Yankees in a three-game American League wild-card series beginning on Tuesday.
No timeline has been announced for his potential return to the field, but Hendriks is no stranger to comebacks. He was diagnosed with Stage 4 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in December of 2022 when he was a member of the Chicago White Sox and made an emotional return to the mound the following year.
In 14 major-league seasons also with the Minnesota Twins, Toronto Blue Jays, Kansas City Royals and Athletics, he has posted 116 saves in 490 career games with a 3.88 ERA.
