The 2021 MLB Draft order has reportedly been set.
According to The Athletic‘s Stephen J. Nesbitt, MLB will determine the order of the annual entry draft as it has done in normal seasons (as opposed to the 2020 pandemic-shortened campaign): reverse order of winning percentage.
That means the Pittsburgh Pirates (19-41) will be on the clock with the opening pick of the 2021 draft, while the Toronto Blue Jays (32-28) will pick 19th. The Houston Astros would’ve held the No. 16 selection, but lost it along with their second-round pick as a result of their sign-stealing scandal.
The selection sequence had been up in the air as the March agreement between MLB and the MLBPA gave commissioner Rob Manfred the right to modify the draft order in case the season was cancelled early and needed to determine the order in an alternate fashion.
The draft order will reportedly be the following:
No. 1: Pittsburgh Pirates
No. 2: Texas Rangers
No. 3: Detroit Tigers
No. 4: Boston Red Sox
No. 5: Baltimore Orioles
No. 6: Arizona Diamondbacks
No. 7: Kansas City Royals
