One of the most recognizable faces at Camden Yards has not been spared from sweeping organizational changes.
The Baltimore Orioles have reportedly cut 16 employees across departments, ranging from ticket sales and graphic design to food and beverage. The downsizing most notably reached the team's entertainment wing, leaving the performers behind the beloved Oriole Bird mascot and "Mr. Splash" without positions.
The Athletic confirmed a report from Yahoo Sports, which initially broke the news regarding the Oriole Bird performer, with a team spokesperson saying that business department cuts occurred. The team declined further comment on specific personnel matters.
Among the high-profile casualties is Mr. Splash — formally listed on the team's official roster as the "Chief Hydration Officer" — whose role debuted in May 2023.
Tasked with dousing cheering fans with water in Section 86 (affectionately known as the "Bird Bath") to celebrate every extra-base hit, Mr. Splash quickly became a fan favourite at the stadium Despite the elimination of the dedicated position, the franchise intends to keep the popular "Bird Bath" section active moving forward, potentially relying on celebrity guest "splashers" to carry on the tradition.
