The Toronto Blue Jays have agreed to a deal worth $2.6 million with 16-year-old shortstop Manuel Beltre, MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez reported.
Beltre is ranked as the No. 24 international prospect in MLB Pipeline's rankings. Friday marks the first day of MLB's international signing period, in which teams may sign international players (aged 16 and up) for their professional playing rights.
Players who are 25 or older and have played in a foreign league for at least six seasons are exempt from this process.
The Blue Jays have $5,348,100 to spent during the international signing period, which runs through Dec. 15, 2021. Nearly half of that is being spent on Beltre.
MLB.com says Beltre "might be the most advanced hitter in this year’s class." He starred for the Dominican Republic's under-14 and under-15 international squads, and has appeared at a handful of Perfect Game circuits in recent years.
