Two-time all-star pitcher Charlie Morton has agreed to a one-year, $15-million deal to join the Atlanta Braves, the team announced Tuesday.
The 37-year-old righty, who spent his rookie year with the Braves after being drafted by the club in 2002, went 2-2 with a 4.74 ERA and 42 strikeouts in 38 innings with the Tampa Bay Rays last season. Despite his below-average regular year, Morton shone in the playoffs as the Rays made a run to the World Series, putting up a 3-1 record with a 2.70 ERA and 23 Ks in 20 innings.
Morton is only one year removed from his best campaign, 2019, when he accrued a 16-6 line and 3.05 ERA with the Rays, while notching 240 strikeouts in 194.2 innings. The performance earned him a third-place finish in AL Cy Young voting.
The year prior, Morton made his first all-star team appearance, compiling a 15-3 record and 3.13 ERA with 201 Ks in 167 innings as a member of the Houston Astros. He won a World Series with the club in 2017.
Across a 13-year career with the Rays, Astros, Phillies, Pirates and Braves, Morton has put up a 93-89 record with a 4.08 ERA.
