Owen Caissie is reportedly heading back to triple-A.
The Chicago Cubs have optioned the Burlington, Ont., native to triple-A Iowa and recalled outfield prospect Kevin Alcantara, according to ESPN's Jesse Rogers.
Caissie, 23, was recalled for his MLB debut on Aug. 14 in Toronto against the Blue Jays.
With the Cubs chasing a return to the post-season and boasting an impressive core of outfielders, Caissie had trouble cracking the club's lineup. He appeared in just 11 games for Chicago, going 5-for-24 with one home run and nine strikeouts.
He had an impressive two-day span for the Cubs when they hosted division-rival Milwaukee in mid-August, picking up his first career hit and homer against the Brewers.
Before getting his call to the big leagues, Caissie was tearing up the minors, cementing his status as the top Canadian position player prospect. Over 93 games at triple-A this season, the former second-round pick hit 22 long balls and owned a .955 OPS.
But with rosters expanding Monday, the Cubs are opting to bring back Alcantara, who debuted in 2024, to go along with their recent acquisitions of first baseman Carlos Santana and right-hander Aaron Civale.
After losing to the Colorado Rockies earlier Sunday, Chicago sits 6.5 games back of Milwaukee in the NL Central while holding down the top wild-card spot in the Senior Circuit.
