The Philadelphia Phillies have added one of the best contact hitters in baseball.
The San Francisco Giants traded second baseman Luis Arraez to the Phillies on Monday, ESPN's Jeff Passan reported.
Philadelphia is sending starter Ramon Marquez, the Phillies’ No. 4 prospect, and reliever Marty Gair to the Giants while San Francisco is also including right-handed reliever Caleb Kilian in the deal, according to USA Today's Bob Nightengale.
Arraez is in the midst of a resurgent season, posting a .324 average and .810 OPS that are both his best marks since his 2023 Silver Slugger season with the Miami Marlins.
The 29-year-old has also had an uncharacteristically strong season in the field, posting a plus-eight fielding run value per Statcast after finishing well in the negatives in each of the previous seven years the stat was tracked.
The Giants, well out of the playoff picture, now cash in on Arraez’s value while the Phillies adds an elite bat-to-ball presence to their lineup.
Bryce Harper reportedly brought his outfielder's glove on the last road trip, saying he was ready to move to the outfield if needed, according to MLB.com's Todd Zolecki.
He's expected to move to the outfield to make room for Luis Arraez in the infield, with Alec Bohm moving to first base and Bryson Stott shifting to third, Zolecki added.
