The San Diego Padres are doing some last-minute shopping.
Nick Castellanos and Griffin Canning have signed contracts with the club, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported on Saturday.
Castellanos was released by the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday with one-year, $20-million remaining on his $100-million, five-year contract after the club was unable to orchestrate a trade during the off-season.
The two-time all-star hit .250 with 17 homers and 72 RBIs in 147 games last season.
Following his release, Castellanos detailed an incident that he was benched for in June when the Phillies were on the road facing the Miami Marlins in a handwritten note posted to Instagram.
"As a veteran of the game of baseball, there are rules and I broke one in Miami," the note states.
After Castellanos was lifted for a late defensive substitution he returned to the dugout from the clubhouse with an open beer in his hand as a sign of protest against manager Rob Thomson.
"I then sat right next to Rob and let him know that too much slack in some areas and too tight of restrictions in others are not conducive to us winning."
Afterward, he went into the office with Thomson and president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski.
“We aired out our differences and the conversation ended with me apologizing for letting my emotions get the best of me,” Castellanos said, adding that he was benched the next game as punishment.
The Padres will pay him the veteran minimum for one season while the Phillies will payout the remaining amount on his previous contract, per Heyman's report.
Canning, 29, signed with the New York Mets last season as a free agent, posting a 3.77 ERA over 16 starts with 70 strikeouts in 76.1 innings.
The 29-year-old debuted with the Los Angeles Angels in 2019 and captured the gold glove award in 2020. The terms of his deal are not yet known.
Elsewhere in their rotation, the Padres have signed German Marquez to a one-year deal, Alden Gonzalez of ESPN reported on Saturday.
Marquez, 30, posted a 6.70 ERA in 26 starts with the Colorado Rockies after spending most of 2024 on the injured list with right elbow inflammation.
