The Boston Red Sox have added some length out of the Bullpen.
The team has acquired left-hander Steven Matz from the St. Louis Cardinals, it announced Wednesday. In return, the Cardinals received infield prospect Blaze Jordan.
Matz, 34, has a 3.44 ERA, striking out 47 and walking only nine over 55 innings in a swingman role for the Cardinals.
After struggling with health and results last season, posting a 5.08 ERA in 12 total appearances, Matz has had success in 2025 while coming out of the bullpen more than ever — 30 of his 32 outings.
The longtime starter will provide the flexibility to cover multiple innings or even start for a Red Sox staff facing multiple injuries to starters including Tanner Houck and Kutter Crawford.
