The Cincinnati Reds have reportedly waived two veteran players.
Slugger Eugenio Suarez and outfielder TJ Friedl have been placed on outright waivers, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported late Wednesday night.
The move makes the two players available to all 29 other teams for 48 hours but if they clear, the Reds could retain their rights or designate them for assignment. A player has to be on a team's roster on Aug. 31 to be eligible for the post-season.
Suarez, 35, still has some pop in his bat with 19 home runs, including a grand slam earlier Wednesday as the Reds rallied with seven runs in the ninth to stun the Giants 10-9. But for the season, he is hitting just .205/.294/.402 with a .696 OPS while also serving as the designated hitter more often than playing third base.
Friedl, 31, has a .476 OPS with just three home runs during a disappointing season in which he lost his centre field spot to Dane Myers.
Rosenthal reports that both players are expected to clear after neither generated significant trade interest at the deadline. Both players are also expected to become free agents this winter.
