Max Scherzer may be following the Roger Clemens plan.
The former Toronto Blue Jays starter and current free agent could wait to sign until after opening day, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported on Friday.
Scherzer, 41, posted a 5.19 ERA in 17 regular-season starts for the Blue Jays last season, but elevated his game in the playoffs to the tune of a 3.77 ERA over three contests, including 3.1 innings to start Game 7 of the World Series.
Now, he could pick a team mid-season once the standings begin to shake out, as Clemens did toward the end of his career also.
Scherzer has already won a pair of World Series in 2019 with the Washington Nationals and 2023 with the Texas Rangers.
The eight-time all-star and three-time Cy Young winner is among a free-agent pitching class that still includes top-end options like Framber Valdez and former Blue Jays teammate Chris Bassitt.
