Sonny Gray isn't ready to hang up his cleats just yet.
The 36-year-old right-hander told the Boston Globe's Alex Speier on Friday that he intends to pitch in 2027 after a successful 2026 season with the Boston Red Sox.
Gray had left his future up in the air after Boston's wild-card loss to the New York Yankees.
But the 14-year veteran appears to have made a swift decision about continuing his big-league career.
“My family and I have talked about it and it’s an easy decision,” Gray told Speier over text. “I still want to win a World Series, whether that is (with) Boston or with whoever wants me.”
Gray will likely hit the open market this off-season as his contract has a mutual option for 2027.
He delivered one of the best years of his career in 2026, leading the American League with 18 wins while carrying a 2.72 ERA over 169 innings and 29 starts.
The Red Sox acquired the three-time all-star from the St. Louis Cardinals last off-season in a deal that sent a player to be named later, Brandon Clarke and Richard Fitts the other way.
Gray also took the ball for Boston in its Game 2 loss to the Yankees in the wild card, working 4.2 innings before being controversially removed with two runners on in the bottom of the fifth — one of which came in to score three pitches later.
After the game, Gray noted his frustration with being pulled, saying, “I’m the best pitcher in the American League third time through the order. I think that’s a fact. I would have liked to have been trusted in that moment.”
Since being selected 18th overall in the 2011 MLB Draft, Gray has spent time with Oakland, the Yankees, Cincinnati, Minnesota, St. Louis and Boston. He has accumulated 2,087 career innings, 2,074 strikeouts, a 3.51 ERA and 143 wins.
