The Detroit Tigers are trading away another starting pitcher.
The Tigers agreed to trade veteran right-hander Casey Mize to the San Diego Padres on Monday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post first reported.
San Diego will also receive third baseman Gage Workman as part of the deal, while pitching prospects Kash Mayfield and Jackson Wolf will head back to Detroit
The teams confirmed the trade on Monday.
Mize, the No. 1 pick in the 2018 MLB Draft, has settled into a consistent rotation role after injuries derailed his career early on. After making only two starts in 2022 and no appearances in 2023, Mize has been a stable starter in each of the last three seasons. He was an All-Star for the first time in 2025.
The 29-year-old right-hander will provide back-of-the-rotation depth for the Padres as they push for a playoff spot. Mize will be a free agent at the end of the season.
Over 16 starts with the Tigers in 2026, Mize had a 2.70 ERA with 85 strikeouts and a 4-6 record.
Mayfield, 21, was the Padres' No. 2-ranked prospect per MLB Pipeline. The 24th overall selection in the 2024 MLB Draft has a 3.54 ERA over 15 starts at the high-A level this season.
The Padres also added Robbie Ray to the rotation in a separate trade with the San Francisco Giants. San Diego entered Monday one game back in the National League wild-card race, with a 58-54 record, after winning eight of their last nine games.
“We’re trying to win,” general manager A.J. Preller said. “We don’t apologize for it. We’re trying to win championships. We’re trying to get to the postseason, and do it year after year.”
