The New York Yankees are adding some power to their lineup for the stretch run.
The Washington Nationals have traded first baseman Luis Garcia Jr. to the Yankees for four players, ESPN's Jeff Passan reported Sunday.
The Nationals receive relief pitchers Jake Bird and Yovanny Cruz along with the Yankees' No. 14 ranked prospect, right-hander Jack Cebert and their No. 25 ranked prospect, right-hander Ben Grable, The Athletic's Spencer Nusbaum reported.
Garcia was scratched from Sunday’s game in order to be protected ahead of the MLB trade deadline.
The 26-year-old is in the midst of a career year, registering career highs in home runs (23), RBIs (76) and OPS (.873) over 104 games with the Nationals.
After debuting at 20 and posting a .266/.299/.410 slash line with a .709 OPS over his first six seasons in Washington, Garcia finally reached the potential the Nationals saw when they awarded him a $1.3-million signing bonus as an international free agent in 2016.
Garcia was also the youngest player invited to major league spring training in 2019.
Before 2026, Garcia primarily played second base, but has shifted to play exclusively at first this season, with some reps at designated hitter mixed in.
His positional fit with the Yankees is murky, considering they already have full-time players at first (Paul Goldschmidt), second (Jazz Chisholm Jr), and DH (Ben Rice).
Garcia has one year of team control remaining after this season.
