The New York Yankees will be without ace Gerrit Cole for at least one to two months as he continues to deal with an injury to his pitching elbow, the New York Post's Jon Heyman reported Wednesday.
Heyman reported that Cole is headed to Los Angeles for an appointment with sports surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache.
Cole has been experiencing issues in bouncing back following spring-training starts, and had an MRI on his right elbow.
"When we have it all, then I'll let you guys know," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said to YES Network on the team's spring-training game broadcast on Wednesday. "As of now, it's still going through the tests phase and all the different people weighing in."
Heyman reports that ElAttrache and Yankees doctors have not detected a tear in his ulnar collateral ligament, but there is enough concern for Cole to head to L.A. for an in-person consultation.
According to Heyman, the belief among the Yankees organization is that Cole has a chance to return sometime in May or early June.
Cole, the 2023 AL Cy Young Award winner, has been durable in his career, making at least 30 starts in each of the last six full regular seasons.
The Yankees said Tuesday they have started having discussions about who could start on opening day if Cole is unavailable.
