Future Hall of Famer Albert Pujols is reportedly returning to the team he had the most success with by rejoining the St. Louis Cardinals.
Derrick S. Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch was first to report the agreement, which was confirmed by other reporters.
Pujols, 42, spent the first 11 seasons of his career with the Cardinals, winning the National League MVP award three times and two World Series titles among a number of career highlights. He is currently fifth all-time with 679 home runs, 17 behind Alex Rodriguez.
In 2012, Pujols left the Cardinals in free agency to join the Los Angeles Angels on a 10-year, $240-million contract. The Angels, looking to give some younger players more opportunities, terminated that contract in the middle of the 2021 season and he finished the year with the Dodgers on a league-minimum contract.
Despite the 10-year gap, Pujols will be reuniting with two long-time Cardinals teammates in St. Louis: catcher Yadier Molina and right-hander Adam Wainwright. The trio were all key contributors on World Series titles in 2006 and 2011.
