The Colorado Rockies have hired long-time scout Bill Schmidt as interim general manager, the team announced Monday.
Schmidt replaces Jeff Bridich, who stepped down on April 26. The Rockies are 10-18 this season and have the worst-winning percentage in the Majors at .357.
“After discussions with the baseball department heads, we have come to the conclusion that Bill is the right person for interim GM,” said President Greg Feasel in a statement. “Bill’s experience and his relationships from top to bottom throughout our organization, including the players, coaches and staff on the field, more than qualify him for this role.”
Schmidt brings 30 years of scouting experience to the general manager role, including 21 years within the Rockies organization — the last 13 as the team’s vice president of scouting. He has also scouted for Cleveland, the New York Yankees, Cincinnati Reds and the MLB Scouting Bureau over his career.
The Rockies say a search for a full-time GM will resume in the off-season.
