PHILADELPHIA — Cam Schlitter bounced back from a poor outing and pitched three-hit ball into the eighth inning, helping the New York Yankees to a 1-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night.
Pitching on four days’ rest after lasting only 4 1/3 innings in a loss Sunday to the Los Angeles Dodgers, Schlitter struck out 12 and threw 68 of his 99 pitches for strikes.
Paul Goldschmidt’s home run to lead off the fourth inning was the only run in the game.
Philadelphia’s Jesus Luzardo (9-5) took the loss. Luzardo threw 105 pitches over seven innings, striking out nine and allowing three hits, including Goldschmidt’s 16th homer.
Schlitter (10-6) shut down the Phillies hitters all night, making Bryson Stott look bad on a strikeout to start the bottom of the eighth.
J.T. Realmuto rolled a single between shortstop and third for the Phillies’ third hit and his second. Schlitter then glanced a pitch off Gabriel Rincones Jr.‘s knee, enough for Yankees manager Aaron Boone to pull his starter.
Pinch-hitter Edmundo Sosa singled off reliever Brent Headrick to load the bases with one out. Trea Turner then tagged a liner to left, but right at Cody Bellinger, who had no problem keeping Realmuto at third. Kyle Schwarber then bounced out to end the Phillies’ threat.
Yankees closer David Bednar started the ninth by getting Bryce Harper to strike out for the third time in the game. Brandon Marsh was retired on a leaping catch by Bellinger. Alec Bohm then grounded out and Bednar earned his 19th save.
ROCKIES 5, BREWERS 2
MILWAUKEE — Tomoyuki Sugano picked up his 10th win and Kyle Karros and TJ Rumfield each had two hits as Colorado capitalized on a fast start to beat Milwaukee.
Sugano (10-4) struck out five over 5 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on a pair of homers — Christian Yelich’s 413-foot leadoff drive in the first inning and Brice Turang’s 434-foot blast in the sixth. Sugano was making his second start since coming off the injured list after missing three weeks due to back spasms.
Milwaukee brought the tying run to the plate after Andrew Vaughn and Jake Bauers started the ninth inning with consecutive singles. Jordan Romano regrouped from there by getting Joey Ortiz to pop up, striking out Gary Sánchez, and retiring Yelich on a fly to right.
Romano picked up his eighth save in 10 opportunities.
Although the Rockies have the National League’s worst record, they’re just one win away from matching their total from a year ago, when they finished 43-119.
TIGERS 2, ROYALS 1
DETROIT — Tarik Skubal had a season-high 12 strikeouts and allowed one run in 7 1/3 innings in what could have been his last home start for Detroit, helping the Tigers to a victory over Kansas City.
The subject of trade rumours as he approaches free agency, the two-time defending AL Cy Young winner pitched out of a seventh-inning jam before walking off the mound to a standing ovation from the sold-out crowd of 40,638.
Skubal returned for the eighth inning with 89 pitches, but was replaced by Brenan Hanifee after retiring Carter Jensen. He left to another ovation, having given up four hits and two walks in his 61st win for the Tigers.
Kenley Jansen pitched the ninth for his 12th save as the Tigers (50-54) improved to 28-16 since June 1. They are four wins away from reaching .500 for the first time since May 4.
Detroit scored twice in the first off Royals opener Beck Way (1-1), but Noah Cameron followed with seven shutout innings.
DIAMONDBACKS 3, NATIONALS 2
WASHINGTON — All-Star Eduardo Rodríguez bounced back from his worst start of the season, Gabriel Moreno drove in the go-ahead run with a sac fly and Arizona beat Washington.
Rodríguez (9-3) held the Nationals to Dylan Crews’ two-run homer in six innings. Arizona has won four straight and 10 of 12 as it fights for an NL wild-card spot.
Paul Sewald worked the ninth for his 24th save.
Moreno broke a 2-2 tie in the seventh with the sacrifice fly. The catcher also singled twice.
Crews’ shot to left-centre tied it at 2 in the fourth.
Arizona scored first on Tim Tawa’s safety squeeze that deadened in the grass, travelling 10 feet down the first-base line, scoring Max Kepler in the second inning. Ketel Marte’s fielder’s choice groundout made it 2-0 later in the inning.
Nationals right-hander Zack Littell (7-8) took the loss.
CUBS 3, PIRATES 2, 10 INNINGS
PITTSBURGH — Dansby Swanson hit an RBI single and Seiya Suzuki drew a bases-loaded walk in the 10th inning as Chicago held on for a win over Pittsburgh.
Swanson’s single scored automatic runner Ian Happ, who barely beat centre-fielder Jake Mangum’s throw to make it 2-1. The call was upheld after a video review.
Suzuki’s walk came off Yohan Ramírez (6-3).
Gavin Holliwell allowed a run on Nick Gonzales’ groundout in the bottom of the 10th but hung on for his first save. Caleb Thielbar (3-2) worked a scoreless ninth.
The Pirates opened the scoring in the fifth inning on back-to-back walks to Marcel Ozuna and Brandon Lowe and consecutive infield singles by Jared Triolo and Henry Davis.
Pittsburgh had the bases loaded with none out, but Matthew Boyd escaped the jam.
Pete Crow-Armstrong tied it at 1-1 in the sixth when he hit his 22nd home run of the season into the right-field stands off Jared Jones. Left fielder Happ helped to keep the score 1-1 in the seventh when he threw out Davis at home for an inning-ending double play.
Crow-Armstrong also doubled in the third.
Boyd surrendered only one run in seven innings despite giving up seven hits and three walks. The left-hander did not factor in the decision, but his six-game winning streak stayed intact.
DODGERS 4, METS 2
NEW YORK — Roki Sasaki pitched seven sparkling innings, Kyle Tucker hit a two-run homer and Los Angeles beat New York.
Freddie Freeman had three hits and Shohei Ohtani put Los Angeles ahead 2-1 with a sacrifice fly off Brooks Raley (4-5) in the seventh.
Tucker homered off left-handed reliever A.J. Minter with two outs in the eighth after Freeman singled leading off the inning and stole second base.
Luis Robert Jr. and Francisco Alvarez homered for New York in the opener of a 10-game homestand. The last-place Mets (43-61) fell a season-worst 18 games under .500 as they prepare for a selloff ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline.
New York slugger Juan Soto was removed for a pinch hitter in the sixth because of left calf soreness.
Coming off a fine outing at Yankee Stadium a week ago, Sasaki (4-5) allowed one run and three hits while striking out nine and walking two for his first win in nine starts since May 23 at Milwaukee. Alvarez went deep against Evan Phillips in the eighth before Tanner Scott worked a perfect ninth for his 16th save.
RAYS 11, GUARDIANS 3
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Ryan Vilade and Richie Palacios hit home runs, Nick Fortes had four hits, and Tampa Bay beat Cleveland.
Shane McClanahan (9-6) allowed one run on two hits while striking out three and walking a pair in five innings. He improved to 7-1 in nine home starts this season. Chris Roycroft earned his first career save, allowing two runs on four hits in three innings.
Fortes tied a career high in hits, drove in a pair of runs and scored twice as he extended his hitting streak to five games, going 11 for 19 in that span.
Tampa Bay’s Nos. 4-9 hitters finished a combined 13 for 26 with 10 RBIs in the game.
Joey Cantillo (8-6) allowed five runs over 3 2/3 innings and Austin Hedges hit a two-run home run in the ninth for the Guardians. Cleveland has dropped three consecutive games.
PADRES 4, MARLINS 2
MIAMI — Pinch-hitter Luis Rengifo hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the eighth inning and San Diego beat Miami, extending its losing streak to 10.
Ty France and Manny Machado each had two hits for the Padres, who are 3-5 on their 10-game road trip following the All-Star break. San Diego finished with five hits but drew seven walks.
The Marlins, who were a season-best 10 games over .500 following their win over Seattle on July 9, have fallen to 52-52. It is the Marlins’ longest slide since they lost 10 straight in June 2011.
France doubled off Tyler Zuber (0-1) to lead off the eighth. Zuber struck out Jackson Merrill before Rengifo drove a sweeper from the Miami reliever over the wall in right to snap a 2-all tie.
Adrian Morejon (8-2) got the last out in the seventh and followed with a scoreless eighth before Mason Miller closed for his 26th save.
Joe Mack and Heriberto Hernández homered for Miami’s runs.
BRAVES 7, ORIOLES 6, 10 INNINGS
BALTIMORE — Matt Olson hit his 27th home run as part of a four-run 10th inning, and Atlanta defeated Baltimore.
Drake Baldwin homered for NL East-leading Atlanta, which has won five of six.
Christian Encarnacion-Strand homered and drove in four for Baltimore, which lost for the third time in four games.
The Braves’ Joey Bart led off the 10th with a bloop single to right off Andrew Kittredge (1-2), advancing automatic runner Brewer Hicklen to third. Baltimore second baseman Jackson Holliday tried to turn a double play on Jim Jarvis’ sharp grounder, but his throw sailed into left field, allowing Hicklen to score.
After Kittredge struck out the next two Braves, Olson launched a three-run homer to right-centre.
Elieser Hernández (1-0) pitched three shutout innings in his debut with the Braves. He escaped a bases-loaded jam in the ninth by coaxing Taylor Ward’s two-out groundout.
Baltimore rallied against Dylan Lee with pinch-hitter Jeremiah Jackson’s sacrifice fly and Encarnacion-Strand’s two-run homer, before Sam Huff struck out to end the game.
RED SOX 6, BLUE JAYS 4
BOSTON — Anthony Seigler led off with a homer and had his first four-hit game in the majors, Romy Gonzalez broke an eighth-inning tie with an RBI double and Boston beat Toronto.
Boston rebounded from a loss Wednesday night in the second game of a doubleheader against Baltimore that ended a 15-game winning streak. The Red Sox are 24-6 in their last 30 games.
After Jarren Duran led off the eighth with his second hit of the night, Gonzalez drove him in with a liner to left. Seigler brought Gonzalez in three pitches later, giving Boston a two-run lead.
Aroldis Chapman struck out two in the ninth for his 24th save of the season and 391st overall, moving him past Dennis Eckersley for sole possession of ninth place on the career list.
Patrick Sandoval went 4 2/3 innings, allowing no runs on five hits and striking out three. Garrett Whitlock (6-1) got the win in relief after allowing one run on two hits in the eighth.
ATHLETICS 2, TWINS 0
MINNEAPOLIS — Jacob Lopez allowed one hit in five innings, Lawrence Butler and Tyler Soderstrom drove in runs and the Athletics beat Minnesota.
Lopez (5-4) has allowed two or fewer runs in three of his last four starts since returning to the big leagues. He spent June with Triple-A Las Vegas after carrying a 6.75 ERA through May 31.
The A’s were held hitless through four innings until Tommy White doubled with one out in the fifth. A walk on either side of White’s double loaded the bases, and Butler hit a sacrifice fly to centre to bring Donovan Walton in and open the scoring.
White nearly scored on a wild pitch to double the lead, but was tagged out by pitcher Zebby Matthews at home for the third out.
Soderstrom drove in Henry Bolte from second with a sixth-inning single that made it 2-0.
Matthews (4-8) allowed both runs on three hits in six innings. He walked three and struck out one. Austin Martin doubled and Ryan Jeffers singled for the Twins’ only hits of the game.
Four A’s relievers combined to allow one hit in four innings, with Hogan Harris working a hitless ninth for his eighth save.
REDS 4, CARDINALS 2
ST. LOUIS — Eugenio Suárez hit a two-run homer, Rhett Lowder pitched two-run ball for five innings and the Cincinnati Reds beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 on Friday night.
Suárez's 435-foot shot to left-center tied him with Eric Davis for 10th in franchise history with 203 home runs. Johnny Bench hit 389 homers for the Reds.
Cincinnati's Sal Stewart and Tyler Stephenson each had two hits and an RBI.
Lowder was perfect through three innings and, after JJ Wetherholt walked, had faced the minimum number of batters after four innings.
Iván Herrera was hit by a pitch to leadoff the fifth, stole second and moved to third when Lars Nootbaar flied out. Masyn Wynn grounded out and Nathan Church walked before Blaze Jordan doubled to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead.
After Stewart singled, Suárez hit his homer off George Soriano (3-3) with two out in the seventh, giving Cincinnati a 3-2 lead.
RANGERS 5, MARINERS 4
ARLINGTON, Texas — Jake Burger hit a two-run home run and a go-ahead single to lead the Texas Rangers past the Seattle Mariners 5-4 on Friday night in the opener of a four-game series between the top two teams in the AL West.
With the win, the Rangers improved to 52-51 and increased their divisional lead to 1 1/2 games ahead of the 51-53 Mariners.
Burger’s fourth-inning homer off Bryce Miller (4-5) tied the score at 3-3. In the sixth, Burger hit the first pitch from Eduard Bazardo up the middle to score Brandon Nimmo and put Texas ahead 4-3.
Nicky Lopez then bunted in front of the plate with runners on the corners. Bazardo fielded the ball bare handed and tossed underhand high off the glove of catcher Cal Raleigh allowing Evan Carter to score.
Peyton Gray (5-0) pitched a scoreless sixth inning and Jacob Latz allowed a run in the ninth but earned his 20th save in 22 opportunities.
ASTROS 9, WHITE SOX 5
CHICAGO — Christian Walker hit a three-run double, Cam Smith added a two-run homer in Houston’s eight-run sixth inning and the Astros overcame a five-run deficit to beat the Chicago White Sox 9-5 on Friday night.
Jeremy Peña and Jose Altuve had three hits apiece for Houston.
Houston starter Spencer Arrighetti left the mound during his warmup pitches and was relieved by AJ Blubaugh to begin the second inning. Arrighetti allowed three runs and two hits, walked two and hit two batters.
Kai-Wei Teng (5-6) pitched two innings for the victory.
Braden Montgomery had a career-high three hits and an RBI for the White Sox. Chase Meidroth doubled and drove in two runs.
GIANTS 8, ANGELS 6 (10)
SAN FRANCISCO — Rafael Devers homered in his first at-bat and hit a walk-off, two-run single in the 10th inning to give the San Francisco Giants a 7-6 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Friday night.
Casey Schmitt also homered and Luis Arraez had two hits to help the Giants end a five-game losing streak. They rallied after blowing leads of 5-1 and 6-4.
Bryce Eldridge doubled, walked and scored twice while Drew Gilbert added two hits for the Giants.
Vaughn Grissom had two hits for the Angels, including a tying two-run home run in the eighth inning.
Pinch-runner Jesus Rodriguez began the 10th at second base and advanced to third on Arraez’s soft single to left. After Heliot Ramos grounded out, Bryce Eldridge walked before Devers hit a deep fly to left off Chase Silseth (3-2) that bounced on the warning track and landed in the stands.
Devers’ winning hit came moments after the Giants got a big defensive play out of center fielder Grant McCrary in the top of the 10th.
McCrary, who entered the game as a pinch-hitter in the ninth, caught Wade Meckler’s fly ball in the top of the ninth then made a strong throw to third to get Grissom for an inning-ending double play.
