Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal has already begun his throwing program and "feels great," Tigers manager A.J. Hinch told reporters Friday.
An initial report last week indicated that Skubal would likely miss four to six weeks after undergoing elbow surgery to remove loose bodies.
However, Hinch described the development as "really exciting" news for the Tigers, who are jostling for position in a crowded AL Central. Skubal is expected to ramp up for bullpen sessions.
Prior to going down with the injury, Skubal had posted a 2.70 ERA with 45 strikeouts in 43.1 innings pitched this season.
The 29-year-old Skubal is the reigning two-time Cy Young Award winner after leading the AL in ERA over the past two seasons. He won the pitching Triple Crown in 2024.
The Tigers will open a three-game series in Detroit against the Toronto Blue Jays Friday evening. Trey Yesavage will get the start for Toronto against Detroit's Brenan Hanifee.
Hinch also mentioned that Casey Mize will get the start for the Tigers against the Jays on Saturday. Toronto is expected to start Kevin Gausman.
