The oldest active major leaguer is set to make his return.
Justin Verlander will start for the Detroit Tigers against the Chicago White Sox on Sunday at Comerica Park, manager A.J. Hinch told reporters on Tuesday.
The 43-year-old right-hander made only one start this season — allowing five runs and eight baserunners over 3.2 innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks — before being placed on the injured list with left hip inflammation.
Verlander is a two-time World Series Champion, three-time Cy Young Award winner and won the 2011 American League MVP. His 3554 strikeouts rank eighth all-time in MLB history.
While he struggled in his lone outing so far this season, Verlander was more than serviceable in his age-42 season, recording a 3.85 ERA with 137 strikeouts and 52 walks over 152 innings with the San Francisco Giants.
