After landing with the Minnesota Twins at the trade deadline, Alan Roden will miss out on a chance to impress his new club over the final month and a half of the season.
Minnesota placed Roden on the 60-day injured list over the weekend with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb, all but ending his 2025 campaign.
With the time off, however, the 25-year-old outfielder is considering undergoing surgery on his thumb after meeting with a hand specialist on Monday.
“I think surgery is probably the best option, just in terms of the predictable outcomes and timeframe to get me back swinging,” he told The Minnesota Star Tribune's Bobby Nightengale.
The left-handed-swinging Roden injured his thumb making a play against the left-field wall in Minnesota, later aggravating it further while sliding into home last Thursday.
Roden, who expects to have a normal off-season if he does undergo surgery, played in 12 games with the Twins after being acquired alongside prospect Kendry Rojas from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for reliever Louis Varland and infielder Ty France.
In those 12 games, Roden picked up six hits and one homer, batting .158 with a .463 OPS.
“The way things turned out, it’s a bummer for me to not be able to play the rest of the season, but you can only go forward, rehab it and then hopefully come back better than ever,” he told Nightengale.
Prior to the trade, Toronto's third-round pick in 2022 struggled in limited time with the Blue Jays. He broke camp with the team to begin the season, but ultimately ended up shuttling between triple-A and the majors as the year wore on.
In the end, he played 43 games for the Blue Jays in his rookie season, slashing .204/.283/.306 with one homer, five doubles and eight RBIs.
