The Minnesota Twins are losing their ace in the midst of a post-season push.
Joe Ryan was placed on the 15-day injured list with a left glute strain, the Twins announced on Friday.
The all-star right-hander had struggled in his three starts after the all-star break, pitching to a 9.39 ERA and allowing seven home runs over 15.1 innings, and reporting issues repeating his delivery.
Ryan, 30, had a 2.85 ERA with 128 strikeouts and 25 walks over 110.1 innings in the unofficial first half of the season.
Right-hander Zebby Matthews was recalled from triple-A St. Paul in a corresponding move and will start Friday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Ryan was initially considered to be among the most sought-after starting pitchers at the MLB trade deadline.
However, that changed when Twins general manager Jeremy Zoll declared the team would be buyers at the deadline, effectively taking Ryan off the market.
