Trent Grisham knows people don't come to games to see him, but the Yankees outfielder still gave the fans what they wanted on Sunday.
With the Yankees making their only trip to Chavez Ravine to face the Dodgers, fans greeted Grisham with "We want Soto" chants when he stepped to the plate in the sixth inning. Grisham, of course, is filling in for Soto in the outfield while the former MVP recovers from left forearm inflammation.
But as the chants rained down, Grisham took a 2-1 fastball from Tyler Glasnow and drilled it into the right-field bleachers. The three-run homer gave the Yankees a 5-3 lead on the way to a 6-4 win.
"Yes I heard them," Grisham said when asked about the chants. "It wasn't about (sending a message), I was just happy that I was able to stay present in the moment and worry about myself."
The home run was Grisham's third on the season. He entered play hitting just .083/.224/.208 in 24 games.
Later in the game, the fans showed their appreciation for Grisham's heroics. When he returned to the plate in the eighth, the chants changed to "We want Grisham."
"I liked those too," Grisham said.
