Luis Gil was very good last time out against the Toronto Blue Jays.
The New York Yankees hope he’ll deliver similar results in the American League Division Series opener.
The Dominican right-hander will start Game 1 against the Blue Jays on Saturday (Sportsnet, 4 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. PT) at Rogers Centre, the Yankees confirmed Friday.
Gil allowed one run on three hits and four walks in six innings in a win over the Blue Jays on Sept. 6.
"Just feel like he's ready for this," Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters on Friday. "He's in line for it ... feel like Luis is ready to go."
Gil was 4-1 with a 3.32 ERA in 11 starts this season. He didn’t make his season debut until Aug. 3 after suffering a lat injury in spring training.
Gil’s last appearance was last Sunday in the Yankees’ season finale. He was left off the team’s wild-card roster.
Gil made his only two career post-season starts last year, pitching to a 6.75 ERA.
Boone also revealed Max Fried will be New York's starting pitcher for Game 2 on Sunday. The three-time all-star posted a 19-5 record on the mound this season, along with a 2.86 ERA and 1.101 WHIP over 195.1 innings.
