As spring training comes to a close and Opening Day approaches, MLB clubs are finalizing their rosters and a number of top prospects are breaking camp with their big-league teams.
Here are some of the most notable names that won roster battles and will be making their MLB debuts next week:
Jordan Walker — Cardinals
The St. Louis Cardinals announced that number four prospect, per MLB Pipeline, Jordan Walker will be on the field when they play the Toronto Blue Jays on March 30.
Walke was selected in the first round of the 2020 MLB Draft and will become the youngest Cardinal to debut since Rick Ankiel in 1999.
In two years of affiliated ball, the 20-year-old has impressed with his hit tool, speed and athleticism, hitting .310 with 33 home runs and 36 stolen bases over 201 minor league games.
He earned his spot on the major league roster with an impressive spring with an .816 OPS, and eight extra-base hits (three home runs) while stealing two bases.
The six-foot-five Georgia native came up as a natural third baseman but has moved to the outfield so he can get in the lineup with current Cardinals star Nolan Arenado.
Anthony Volpe — Yankees
MLB Pipeline's number-five prospect, Anthony Volpe, will be the New York Yankees' starting shortstop when the team hosts the San Francisco Giants on Thursday.
In maybe the highest-profile position battle of 2023, Volpe emerged as the leading candidate with a strong spring performance. In 17 games, the 21-year-old posted a 1.064 OPS with 10 extra-base hits and five stolen bases.
Volpe was a first-round pick in the 2019 MLB Draft and has shot up prospect lists over the past two seasons. He started 2021 at high-A and finished 2022 at triple-A, racking up 48 home runs, 88 stolen bases and a .268 average over four levels the past two seasons.
The New Jersey native will be the first rookie in the Yankees' Opening Day lineup since reining AL MVP Aaron Judge in 2017 and the youngest to do so since Derek Jeter in 1996.
Oscar Colas — White Sox
The Chicago White Sox are reportedly going to begin the season with 24-year-old Cuban outfielder Oscar Colas on their Opening Day roster.
MLB's Pipeline's 85th-ranked prospect, Colas joined the White Sox system in 2022 and shot from high-A to triple-A, hitting .314 with 24 home runs in 117 games.
The 24-year-old also has professional experience in NPB, where he played with the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks.
Colas showcased his power this spring, hitting three home runs and two doubles in 26 games of Cactus League action.
Jared Schuster and Dylan Dodd — Braves
While not top-100 prospects, Jared Schuster and Dylan Dodd have earned roles in the Atlanta Braves rotation to start the season.
Schuster is the Braves' number one prospect and was a first-round pick in the 2020 draft. He has a career-minor-league ERA of 3.90 in 212.1 innings, pitching at double-A and triple-A in 2022.
Dodd, meanwhile, is Atlanta's number 10 prospect and was a third-round pick in the 2021 draft. He has a 3.87 ERA in 156 minor-league innings, pitching across three levels in 2022.
This spring, the duo separated themselves, allowing a combined seven runs in 36.2 innings — a 1.74 ERA. They've also struck out a combined 38 hitters, while only walking eight.
