Blue Jays acquire LHP Genesis Cabrera from Cardinals, DFA Trent Thornton

John Schneider joins Blair & Barker to discuss the Blue Jays' newest reliever in Genesis Cabrera, how the lefty fits in the bullpen, and how a manager gains trust with a situational reliever.

The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired southpaw Genesis Cabrera from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for minor-league catching prospect Sammy Hernandez, the team announced Friday.

The 26-year-old reliever posted a 5.06 ERA across 32.0 innings pitched this season with the Cardinals, who designated Cabrera for assignment on Monday.

The Blue Jays’ bullpen has been strong across high-leverage innings in the past month, but Cabrera provides another left-handed option out of the bullpen, after Tim Mayza.

In order to make room on the 40-man roster for Cabrera, the Blue Jays have designated RHP Trent Thornton for assignment.

The Cardinals will receive 19-year-old catcher Sammy Hernandez in the trade, who has spent the previous two seasons with the Florida Complex and State Leagues. He was selected by the Blue Jays in the 14th round of the 2022 MLB June Amateur Draft.
