The Minnesota Twins continued to rack up injuries on Saturday when they placed both Carlos Correa and Chris Paddack on the injured list.
In corresponding moves, the Twins recalled Canadian infielder Edouard Julien from triple-A St. Paul and reinstated former Toronto Blue Jays draft pick Austin Martin from the 10-day injured list.
Correa will go on the 10-day injured list with right plantar fasciitis, an injury which caused him to skip out on this year’s All-Star Game. The former World Series champion has been excellent for Minnesota this season, posting a .308/.377/.520 slash line with 13 home runs, earning his third career trip to the Midsummer Classic.
Paddack is headed for the 15-day injured list with a right forearm strain. In 88.1 innings this season, he owns a 4.99 ERA.
Julien will rejoin the Twins after being optioned to triple-A in early June. The Quebec City native got out to a hot start in his second MLB season but struggled mightily in May before being sent down.
The 25-year-old owns a .780 OPS in 35 games with the St. Paul Saints and has gained some momentum over the past month, reaching base in over 45 per cent of his plate appearances since the middle of June.
After starring for Canada at the 2023 World Baseball Classic, Julien became a bright spot in the Twins lineup, helping them win the AL Central in his rookie campaign. He slashed .263/.381/.459 with 16 home runs and 64 walks. His 16 long balls set a record for most in a season by a Canadian second baseman.
Martin, who was traded from Toronto to Minnesota as part of the Jose Berrios trade, has been up and down between the minors and majors in 2024. He has suited up in 47 games for the Twins this season, slashing .265/.331/.372 with one home run and six stolen bases.
The 25-year-old utility player was on the injured list due to an oblique strain.
Minnesota enters play on Saturday with a 54-42 record, holding the second spot in the AL Central and AL wild-card race.
Julien is scheduled to play second base and bat ninth as the Twins take on the Milwaukee Brewers.
