San Diego Padres star Fernando Tatis Jr. was forced to leave Monday’s game against the San Francisco Giants because of a left shoulder subluxation, the team announced. He will be re-evaluated Tuesday.
A shoulder subluxation, more commonly known as a partial dislocation, happens when the head of a person’s arm bone comes partway out of the socket. This is notably different from a full dislocation, in which the head of the bone pulls completely out of the socket.
In both full and partial dislocations, a person’s joint capsule, ligaments or labrum can be stretched, torn or detached from the bone. Until further tests have been completed, the extent to which any of this damage happened in Tatis Jr.’s case cannot be determined.
Tatis Jr. was injured during an at-bat at the bottom of the third inning, when he swung at a pitch and could be seen immediately grabbing his left elbow in visible discomfort.
After spending some time on the ground, Tatis Jr. went to the clubhouse.
Tatis Jr. has struggled early on this season, committing five errors and hitting just .167, although he hit a 465-foot home run in Sunday’s loss to Arizona.
The 22-year-old signed a 14-year, $340 million contract this past off-season.
