As the Toronto Blue Jays look to pick up their first series win in over a month, George Springer and Danny Jansen won’t be in the lineup.
Going up against Chicago White Sox right-hander Nick Nastrini, the Blue Jays have Cavan Biggio hitting sixth and playing right field and Alejandro Kirk handling duties behind the plate and batting seventh.
Despite swinging a hot bat recently, Toronto manager John Schneider said pre-game that the team needs to balance Jansen’s workload as a catcher.
“He’s obviously swinging the bat really well. He’ll be ready to go today if we need him at some point during the game,” Schneider said. “It’s a delicate balance (giving him time off from catching), and it’s tough to take him out of the lineup, for sure, but you’ve got to trust everybody… and you don’t want to run Jano into the ground.”
Jansen enters play Wednesday as the team leader in batting average, on-base percentage and slugging through his first 23 games of the season.
Kirk, meanwhile, has continued to struggle at the plate in 2024, posting a .198/.295/.284 slash line.
Springer is also out for rest, as the Blue Jays try to manage his workload. Schneider said the day off was an opportunity for the 34-year-old to “catch his breath a little bit.”
After being removed from the leadoff spot over the weekend, Springer has gone 2-for-12 with three walks.
Davis Schneider is back in the leadoff spot for Wednesday’s game.
