Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is day-to-day with a right hand injury. The Toronto Blue Jays outfielder will most likely be a designated hitter prior to going back to the outfield, according to Ben Nicholson-Smith.
The incident which injured Gurriel Jr. occurred in the fifth inning of Thursday’s game against the Minnesota Twins. As Randal Grichuk made a throw from the outfield, Gurriel Jr. crouched in front of him to avoid the ball. However, as part of his follow through on the play, Grichuk’s foot landed on Gurriel Jr.’s hand.
X-rays on Gurriel Jr.’s right hand came back negative, though he received two stitches on his right middle finger.
“Everything we’ve heard is the best news we could get,” John Schneider, who served as the Blue Jays’ manager on Thursday in place of the suspended Charlie Montoyo, said after . “Obviously a couple stitches, but we’ll see how he is tomorrow. I think when you’re dealing with any kind of cut or laceration, and nothing really structurally wrong with him, I think that’s a best-case scenario.”
Corey Dickerson entered the game to fill in for Gurriel Jr.
Across 137 games this season, Gurriel Jr. is batting .285 with 21 home runs.
“Hopefully he heals up quick,” Schneider added. “He’s a big part of what we’re doing so hopefully he’s back in there as soon as he can be, but we’ll see how he shows up tomorrow and how everything looks. Like we said, the initial report, the x-rays, were negative so that’s a good thing.”
