A new potential ownership group has emerged for the Vancouver Whitecaps.
Former Vancouver Canucks owner Arthur Griffiths is leading a group that has made an offer to buy the MLS team, Sportsnet's Dan Murphy reported Friday.
The Whitecaps and MLS did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Sportsnet on Friday.
The club has been for sale since late 2024, with ownership citing ongoing challenges tied to stadium control and revenue at its home stadium, BC Place, which is owned and operated by the province.
Greg Kerfoot is the majority owner of the Whitecaps. Jeff Mallett, Steve Luczo and two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash are minority partners.
In April, a Las Vegas-based group made an offer to buy the Whitecaps. The group is interested in relocating the club to Nevada.
Griffiths sold the Canucks to John McCaw in 1997. He was also responsible for bringing the NBA's Vancouver Grizzlies to the city in 1995. The Grizzlies moved to Memphis in 2001.
While the Whitecaps have had financial challenges, they have achieved some of their best results on the field recently.
The Whitecaps made it to the MLS final last year and are tied for first in the Western Conference standings this year.
There is support for the Whitecaps in the city. The club said Friday that more than 35,000 tickets have been sold for Saturday's home game against Los Angeles FC.
The club's uncertainty has continued as Vancouver pursues an MLB team, with a potential ownership group announced this week.
The Whitecaps began play in MLS in 2011 and are one of three Canadian teams in the league.
