Las Vegas’s loss could be Edmonton’s gain.
A women’s bantamweight title fight between Amanda Nunes and Valentina Shevchenko was pulled from Saturday’s UFC 213 after Nunes fell ill and UFC president Dana White says the bout could be moved to UFC 215 in September.
“We’re going to look to make this fight again. Hopefully in Edmonton,” White told ESPN Saturday evening. “We have a fight coming up in Edmonton…We’ll try to make the fight then.”
White told FOX Sports that Nunes, who spent time in the hospital both Friday and Saturday, was medically cleared to fight, but the Brazilian said she didn’t feel well enough to compete.
Nunes holds a victory over Shevchenko when the two met at UFC 196 in March 2016. In that fight, Nunes did enough to win the first two rounds before Shevchenko poured it on in the final frame. Nunes walked away with the unanimous decision victory, but based on how dominant Shevchenko was in the third round many expected to see a rematch. Nunes earned a title shot with her victory over Shevchenko and went onto beat Miesha Tate at UFC 200 to win the championship. She then defended her belt against Ronda Rousey at UFC 207.
UFC 215 is scheduled to take place Sept. 9 at Rogers Place. Other bouts currently expected to take place on card include:
— Francis Ngannou vs. Junior Dos Santos
— Gilbert Melendez vs. Jeremy Stephens
— Ilir Latifi vs. Tyson Pedro
— Wilson Reis vs. Henry Cejudo
— Gavin Tucker vs. Rick Glenn
— Sara McMann vs. Ketlen Vieira
— Sarah Moras vs. Ashlee Evans-Smith
— Luis Henrique vs. Arjan Bhullar
