It was quite an eventful weekend in the world of combat sports.

Henry Cejudo became the latest two-division champ with his win over Marlon Moraes at UFC 238; Valentina Shevchenko flattened Jessica Eye with a devastating head-kick knockout to defend her title; Tony Ferguson closed Donald Cerrone’s eye in a thrilling lightweight bout; Gennady Golovkin made quick work of Canadian Steve Rolls; and, of course, Justin Bieber challenged Tom Cruise to a fight.

That last tidbit would’ve been largely irrelevant to sports fans had one of the biggest names in mixed martial arts not reacted to it.

Bieber’s Twitter account, for reasons not quite clear, did the 21st century equivalent of slapping Cruise across the face with a glove – he sent a challenge over social media as a means to garner attention.

The Canadian music superstar tagged UFC president Dana White in the tweet while inquiring about prospective promoters and it piqued the interest of master of self-promotion Conor McGregor among many others.

While McGregor was on the topic of celebrity fights, the former UFC champion issued a challenge to Mark Wahlberg, who once portrayed boxer Micky Ward in the 2010 film The Fighter.

Bieber, 25, opened as a -200 favourite over the soon-to-be 57-year-old Cruise on the betting lines even though a fight between the two global superstars actually materializing isn’t anywhere close to realistic.
