New UFC strawweight champion Jessica Andrade is OK after being carjacked at gunpoint in her native Brazil.

Andrade and her wife, Fernanda Gomes, were driving in Niteroi, Brazil on Thursday morning when their vehicle was stopped by armed criminals. Gomes explained on her Facebook page that they were unharmed and got back home safely, but that their phones were taken in addition to the gray Honda HRV they were driving.

Andrade’s manager, Tiago Okamura, confirmed to multiple outlets that the couple filed a police report and a search for the stolen vehicle, which was insured, was underway.

“They took her documents (including Andrade’s passport), they took the car, they took phones, so we just spent the day doing paperwork and canceling credit cards,” Okamura told MMAJunkie. “Right now, we’re just glad that nothing bad happened. Nothing major that can’t be regained. Both her and her wife are safe, so that’s all that matters.”

Prior to this incident, it had been tough to wipe the smile off Andrade’s face since she defeated Rose Namajunas in front of the home crowd earlier this month at UFC 237 to win the 115-pound title.

Andrade (20-6) has become one of the more popular fighters in the women’s division, winning seven of her past eight bouts and earning six post-fight bonuses plus a championship belt along the way.

It’s unclear at this point when Andrade’s first title defence will take place and whom it might be against.
