Canadian John Makdessi lost a controversial decision to Brazilian Alan Patrick in the featured preliminary bout at UFC 169 Saturday at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.
Makdessi, who trains out of Tristar Gym in Montreal, was able to stay on the outside and pick Patrick apart for the majority of the fight.
Patrick, a training partner of middleweight contender Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, had a significant size advantage and was able to power his way to two brief takedowns, but Makdessi stuffed nine of 11 takedown attempts while outstriking Patrick in each round, 66-42 overall.

Two judges scored the bout 29-28 and one had it 30-27, all for Patrick.
Patrick (12-) improved to 2-0 in the UFC; the loss ended a three-fight win streak for Makdessi (12-3).
Following the fight, UFC commentator Joe Rogan was stunned at the decision.
“Uh, what?” a confused Rogan said. “No comment. I’m gonna throw up.”
Rogan wasn’t the only one puzzled by the decision.
