LAS CRUCES — As he continues to add to his arsenal, Joseph Benavidez has tried to change his mentality as a mixed martial arts professional.
Benavidez has won his last two fights since losing to Demetrious Johnson for the flyweight title just over a year ago.
“I just realized that it’s not life or death,” Benavidez said. “I did not fight that great when I prepare like that. I’m not dead. I just lost a fight and I knew that I would be back.”
Benavidez is the clear top contender in the new division with victories over Ian McCall and Darren Uyenoyama since.
Benavidez is on the main card of Wednesday’s UFC Fight Night in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

“I have been to a fight in Brazil and it’s really second to none as far as UFC crowds go,” Benavidez said. “It’s the birthplace of MMA so for me I’m looking forward to it.”
Benavidez takes on Brazilian Jussier Formiga, who is listed as the No. 5 flyweight contender at 15-2.
“As far as grappling, (Formiga) is dangerous but I think I can be hard to hold onto,” Benavidez said. “I think I can compete with him on the ground as long as I can stay on top. I don’t think he can keep up with my pace. I think it’s a good fight for me.”
With three straight wins, Benavidez would be in a
situation to ask for another title shot. Another title shot is a possibility as long as the wins keep coming, but it’s not first and foremost for the Las Cruces High School graduate.
“I was stressing over every result but now I can become a better fighter without stressing and be ready for when that time comes,” Benavidez said.
