Popular and polarizing welterweight star Nick Diaz turned down a rematch with Carlos Condit, but is considering a return to the UFC in May, according to UFC president Dana White.

White told reporters Saturday at the UFC on FOX 9 post-fight press conference he offered Diaz — who announced his retirement from MMA following a UFC 158 loss to Georges St-Pierre in March — a fight with Condit at UFC 171, but that Diaz didn’t want it.

“Condit accepted immediately, wanted the fight, and I didn’t get it done,” White explained.

UFC 171 takes place on March 15 in Dallas and is headlined by Johny Hendricks vs. Robbie Lawler with the vacant UFC welterweight title on the line — St-Pierre relinquished his championship belt Friday after announcing he’d be stepping away from MMA for an unspecified amount of time.

Diaz lost a close decision to Condit in the main event of UFC 143 for the interim title in February 2012 while St-Pierre was on the shelf recovering from knee surgery.

White added that Diaz said he’d fight the winner of Hendricks-Lawler, but White isn’t in favour of that idea since Diaz has lost two straight.
