Sarah Moras TUF 18 blog: Missing weight is crazy

Sarah Moras of Kelowna, B.C., was one of four Canadians competing on The Ultimate Fighter 18. She has been writing weekly blogs for sportsnet.ca to share an inside perspective about what went on inside the gym and house on TUF 18.

Ok, So this has to be one of the most crazy episodes. We’ve had the “double feature” turn into a normal episode, a recap episode and now an episode with no fights at all. Even though this season isn’t the most popular season, I’m sure it has potential to at least be the most talked about season. Two guys missing weight, in one season, like when does that ever happen?

So I have to start off by giving Davey Grant credit. Him and Michael Wootten probably had the biggest weight cuts out of anyone in the house (including Anthony Gutierrez) and he made weight like a champ. Davey is such a true warrior and fighter, he was so upset when he didn’t get his chance to fight, and I give him so much credit for that. Most people in his shoes would be stoked to get a certain pass to the finals. Davey was hurt, and in some ways he’s like me I think where I just want to crush peoples faces in and that the hard part is making weight, the fun part is fighting, and when you don’t get to fight or get to show the world what you are capable, it feels like the worst thing in the world. We are always told that every fight you have you grow so much as a fighter, but you grow because of your camp and everything that lead up to that point of making weight as well. I’ve never been in Davey’s shoes where that has happened and I can’t imagine how terrible that was for him.

I really feel for Davey with this episode, and I again can somewhat relate to him. I feel like he probably didn’t get the kind of credit he deserved for this “fight.” He made weight, he fought to get in the house and destroyed the guy, and then did very well against Louis Fisette as well. Then he made weight and was fully ready to fight again. If I were in charge of rankings and fights and stuff like that, I think that if a person misses weight to a certain extent and commissions do not allow the fight, that should go as a loss on their record and a win on their opponent’s if they make weight. I know that there would be some situations that would be excused with that rule. Anyway, I am extremely proud of Davey for making weight and for being the person that he is. I wish this season showed more of him because he was even funnier than I was.

So this entire episode has basically been about Anthony, so I’d rather not give him all the attention in my blog as well. The funny part about Anthony missing weight was him eating so much crappy food (and they weren’t exaggerating if anything they were being kind because that guy can eat!) and saying he can make weight unlike Cody, because he trains hard, and then misses weight. And the part that made me laugh the most, I’m not sure if many of you viewers at home noticed this, but when Dana came in to give Anthony the “Get the BEEP out” speech, Anthony totally stole the words right out of Dana’s mouth. There are two things Anthony is very good at, talking, and eating. He might be good at fighting, but I never got the chance to see him fight.

Lastly, the coaches challenge. Obviously I was disappointed that Miesha didn’t win, and I actually had a couple people tweet me about my face after the challenge. I don’t come from a rich family, I don’t have a high paying job, and I knew that once I got home it’d be hard for me to work and have the show airing at the same time. I honestly don’t even know how I did it as long as I did. It’s a lot of work dealing with media and fans and hate. Nevermind working, training and teaching. I had months where every day was going from 4 a.m. until 11 p.m., so needless to say I was really hoping our team would win so I’d have a few extra bucks so I wouldn’t have to work as much.

The whole thing with Ronda giving Miesha the finger. I thought it was pretty funny, and if someone did that to me I’d give them the finger in return and stick my tongue out as well. That wouldn’t happen though, because I’d be the one winning and poking fun at the loser. I don’t think Miesha took it too serious anyway.
