Tristar’s Garcia thrills crowd in UFC 171 win

Alex Garcia joins Showdown Joe to comment after his bout with Sean Spencer at UFC 171.

Alex Garcia of Tristar Gym in Montreal put on a show against fellow welterweight Sean Spencer on the UFC 171 preliminary card.

Garcia won a fan-friendly split decision that included one of the most dramatic and exciting rounds of UFC action so far this year.

The first round had relatively even striking exchanges with Garcia being able to take Spencer down several times, but in the second round, things got crazy.

Spencer rocked Garcia with a huge right hand that had the Dominican-born Montrealer on queer street. Instead of retreating or going down, Garcia fired back and stunned Spencer with a right hand of his own. The two continued to trade haymakers for the remainder of the round, which resulted in some high praise on social media.

All in all, Garcia landed 33 significant strikes in the frame compared to Spencer’s 26. Garcia also landed three takedowns. The final round saw Garcia secure two more takedowns en route to a split decision win, despite Spencer finding a home for some more quality punches.

Garcia (12-1) improved to 2-0 in the UFC, while Spencer’s record dropped to 11-3 and had a two-fight win streak snapped.
