UFC 169 is almost upon us and champions Renan Barao and Jose Aldo, plus challengers Urijah Faber and Ricardo Lamas made weight Friday at the official weigh-ins.
Barao is set to defend his bantamweight title against Faber in the headliner, which is a rematch of when the two men met in the main event of UFC 149 in Calgary in 2012. Barao won a unanimous decision the first time around, but Faber has gone 4-0 since that meeting and hopes things go differently this time.
“The difference is I’m gonna win this time,” Faber, who stepped on the scale at 134.5 pounds,” said. “It’s going to be a war…I’ve got a great opponent and looking to get that strap.”
Barao is looking to extend his unbeaten streak to a whopping 33 straight fights.
“I hope to knock him out,” Barao, 135 pounds, said through a translator. “I’m here to fight one of the best in the world and I’m here to win.”
PROGRAMMING NOTE: Watch UFC 169 preliminary fights on Sportsnet 360 Saturday starting at 8 p.m. EST
In the co-main event, the featherweight title is on the line as Aldo meets Lamas. With a victory, Aldo will extend his win streak to a 17 straight, while Lamas looks to improve to 5-0 in the UFC en route to becoming the new champ. Aldo weighed in at 145 pounds; Lamas was 144.5 pounds.
Flyweight John Lineker nearly missed weight for the fourth time in six UFC bouts as he stepped on the scale at 127 pounds, just one pound over the limit for non-title flyweight bouts. Lineker had one additional hour to shed the extra pound and he was able to make weight on his second attempt. The Brazilian faces Ali Bagautinov on pay-per-view card with a potential title shot on the line.
Also on the main card, a heavyweight bout between two of the sport’s best big boys is set to go down as former UFC champ Frank Mir (256.5 pounds) takes on former Strikeforce champ Alistair Overeem (257 pounds). Mir has lost three straight, while Overeem has been knocked out in two straight, so the loser of this bout could possibly find themselves being cut from the UFC roster.
