Kamaru Usman picked up the biggest win of his career Saturday by earning a unanimous decision victory over Demian Maia in the main event of a UFC Fight Night event at Movistar Arena in Santiago, Chile.
Usman has steadily risen up the welterweight rankings since winning The Ultimate Fighter 21 three years ago. The 31-year-old improved to 8-0 in the UFC with the win, his first over a top-10-ranked opponent.
Meanwhile, Maia has now lost three consecutive bouts by unanimous decision. The mild-mannered Brazilian is 40 years old and it’s unclear how much longer his mixed martial arts will last.
Usman was the No. 7-ranked contender at 170 pounds heading into the event and Maia was No. 5.
Tatiana Suarez improved to 6-0 as a pro with a first-round submission victory over Alexa Grasso in the night’s no-main event.
Former LFA women’s flyweight championship Andrea Lee made a successful UFC debut by sweeping the scorecards against Veronica Macedo.
Rising light-heavyweight contender Dominick Reyes earned another stoppage victory as he finished knockout artist Jared Cannonier with punches in less than three minutes.
Canadian Chad Laprise had a three-fight winning streaked snapped by Vicente Luque after getting clipped by a right hook in the first round of their welterweight scrap.
