The International Cricket Council has suspended Cricket Canada's membership, but Canadian teams are still eligible to compete in sanctioned events.
Cricket's governing body announced in a release Monday after its board meeting in Ahmedabad, India, that Cricket Canada is suspended immediately due to "serious breaches of its membership obligations." The release did not provide details on Cricket Canada's violations.
"Cricket Canada acknowledges the International Cricket Council’s decision of 12 May 2026 to withhold Associate Member funding and wishes to provide clarity on the actions taken to address the concerns raised," Cricket Canada wrote in a statement provided to Sportsnet. "Since receiving the ICC’s notice, Cricket Canada has undertaken immediate, comprehensive, and structured corrective measures to remedy the governance, financial oversight, and administrative deficiencies identified in the ICC’s correspondence."
The announcement comes amid an ICC investigation into allegations of corruption against Cricket Canada that were raised in the CBC documentary "Corruption, Crime and Cricket" earlier this year.
"The suspension was unexpected," Cricket Canada's statement continued. "Nevertheless, Cricket Canada respects the ICC’s decision and is fully committed to meeting all compliance requirements. The Board has directed the Committee to accelerate its investigative and reform mandate to ensure that governance, financial oversight, and reporting systems are strengthened without delay."
According to a report from cricket industry news site cricexec, Cricket Canada saw its ICC funding frozen in March because of governance and financial oversight concerns.
The ICC said the decision to allow Canadian teams to compete during the suspension was made to ensure players were not hurt by issues affecting Cricket Canada.
Additionally, Cricket Canada will have limited access to financial resources for its national teams from a controlled funding mechanism under ICC oversight.
Cricket Canada also affirmed that "all non-national team programming for the 2026 season will proceed as scheduled."
The ICC said it will provide Cricket Canada with a set of reinstatement conditions, and reinstatement will be contingent on the organization meeting the conditions to the satisfaction of the ICC's board.
