Canada bumped from volleyball world championship

TRIESTE, Italy — Canada was eliminated from the world women’s volleyball championship Sunday after a three-set loss to Bulgaria.

Nikolova Emiliya scored 13 points for Bulgaria, which beat Canada with set scores of 25-17, 25-16 and 25-18.

Lucy Charuk of Tsawwassen, B.C., had 10 points for Canada, while Victoria’s Shanice Marcelle added nine.

Canada (1-4) finished fifth in its six-team pool, with the top four advancing. Bulgaria finished third and moves on to the next round.

Canada opened the tournament with a win over Cameroon but were not able to make significant headway against any of the other teams in its pool, which also included powerhouse Brazil as well as Turkey and Serbia. "

"We had our moments but they were too rare. We have to work hard to come back better in four years time," Canada coach Arnd Ludwig said. "I wish Bulgaria good luck for the next matches."
